Audition
Audition is a client-side Fabric mod that thins out sound in noisy areas: mob farms, explosions and busy redstone builds. It drops distant and duplicate sounds before they start, so the sounds near you stay clear and fewer sounds compete for Minecraft's limited sound channels.
How it decides
Every sound request is checked before vanilla allocates a channel for it:
- Always plays: player, UI and voice sounds, sounds attached to you (such as music), and anything within 8 blocks.
- Always dropped: sounds more than 32 blocks away. Most vanilla sounds are already silent at that distance.
- In between (8–32 blocks):
- If the same sound has already played this tick, repeats are dropped.
- Each remaining sound gets a priority from its distance and category. Low-priority sounds are dropped. Quieter categories such as ambient and weather go first, and mobs and blocks are rarely affected at default settings.
- The cut-off rises as more sounds are playing at once, so Audition gets stricter in noisy areas. Even in quiet areas, a few distant low-priority sounds can be dropped.
All the distances and weights are configurable.
Installation
Client-side only. Requires Fabric Loader and Fabric API. Put the JAR in your mods folder. It can be added to or removed from existing worlds at any time, and servers don't need it.
Configuration
Open the settings with a keybind (default V, changeable in Controls). Changes apply immediately and are saved to a JSON file in your config folder.
- Master toggle: turns Audition off entirely. All sounds then behave as in vanilla.
- Aggressiveness: how readily low-priority sounds between 8 and 32 blocks are dropped.
- Culling distance: beyond this distance sounds are always dropped (default 32 blocks).
- Always-audible distance: within this distance sounds always play (default 8 blocks).
- Max concurrent sounds: the number of playing sounds at which Audition is at its strictest (default 64). It is not a hard limit.
- Distance and category weights: how much distance and category count toward a sound's priority.
All Versions
+ Add Version- Full Structural Rewrite:** Re-engineered the entire core architecture from the ground up to improve efficiency and stability, replacing the previous legacy implementation.
## Features
- Virtualization Queue Implementation:** Added a dynamic, thread-safe audio sorting system that intercepts sound requests before audio channels initialize.
- Dynamic Load Regulation:** Integrated a real-time tick sampler that automatically scales sound-dropping thresholds as sound density peaks, preventing microstutters under extreme load.
- Fail-Open Safety Mechanics:** Isolated all injection points at the entry window of the audio loop. Internal exceptions are now caught and safely logged, disabling the optimization layer and reverting cleanly to vanilla sound management instead of crashing the client.
