Cold Sweat: Altitude
Cold Sweat: Altitude is a Cold Sweat addon that makes the world’s temperature change with height.
It was designed with Create: Aeronautics in mind: a climb in an airship should feel different from travelling at sea level. As a ship rises, the air can become colder, more exposed, and eventually dangerous without the right preparation. The same system also gives modpacks control over caves, mountains, and every layer in between.
Requires Cold Sweat 2.4.4 or newer.
Features
- Define warm underground layers, temperate surface conditions, cold mountains, and hazardous upper skies
- Create smooth temperature changes between altitude layers, rather than abrupt jumps
- Add wind exposure to high-altitude areas, making open-air travel more dangerous
- Sew Windproof Lining into armour at Cold Sweat's Sewing Table to prepare for exposed flights
- Let shelter reduce altitude and wind exposure, whether on the ground or aboard a ship
- Fully supports Create: Aeronautics, so altitude temperature and wind continue to matter while flying on assembled ships
- Keep Cold Sweat's usual biome, weather, thermal-block, hearth, and insulation systems working alongside altitude effects
- Give players clear, colour-coded feedback as they move between altitude layers
Cold Sweat: Altitude is built for pack makers who want vertical travel to matter. Use it to make mountain expeditions require preparation, make caves feel distinct from the surface, or turn a high-altitude flight into a real survival challenge.

+ Add Version## Important
Apologies! The initial 0.8.0 build was accidentally built against an unreleased development version of Cold Sweat.
0.8.1 has been rebuilt and tested against the public release of [Cold Sweat 2.4.3.1](https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/mc-mods/cold-sweat/files/8888797).
## Updated
- Rebuilt against the released Cold Sweat 2.4.3.1 jar.
- Confirmed Create: Aeronautics 1.3.2 and Sable NeoForge 2.0.5 compatibility using their released jars.
- Confirmed hearth warmth still works correctly aboard assembled Create: Aeronautics ships.
There are no gameplay or balance changes in this patch. It is a corrected 0.8.0 build using the proper public dependencies.
## **Important: a new default config is highly recommended!**
This is a sky-focused update with substantial balance work around a new wind chil system. I have spent considerable time tuning the default altitude bands, wind exposure, shelter, and protection so high-altitude travel feels dangerous but survivable with the right preparation.
Existing configs will continue to work, but the new default config is strongly recommended for the intended balance.
## Added
- Added Windproof Lining, a new sewn armour lining made through Cold Sweat's insulation system.
- Windproof Lining protects specifically against altitude wind exposure without acting as normal cold insulation.
- Added a white windproof indicator to Cold Sweat's existing armour insulation UI.
- Added per-band wind exposure settings, allowing pack makers to control how dangerous exposed high-altitude areas are.
- Added wind protection scaling based on the number of Windproof Linings worn.
- Added Cold Sweat elevation compatibility: Cold Sweat's own elevation modifier is suppressed only while an Altitude band is actively controlling temperature, preventing the two elevation systems from stacking.
- Added improved status diagnostics for altitude, wind exposure, windproof protection, shelter, thermal blocks, hearths, and Sable ship positions.
## Improved
- Rebalanced the default altitude bands as a complete sky pass.
- High-altitude areas now become progressively more dangerous, with windproof protection, cold insulation, shelter, and heat sources all playing distinct roles.
- Improved Create: Aeronautics / Sable hearth handling on assembled ships.
## Compatibility
Tested with:
- Cold Sweat 2.4.3.1
- Create: Aeronautics 1.3.2
- Sable NeoForge 2.0.5
- NeoForge 21.1.252
## Looking ahead
Version 0.8 is a sky pass focused on wind, altitude travel, ship survival, and high-altitude balance.
The planned focus for 0.9 is an underground pass, exploring geothermal exposure, ventilation, and deeper environmental temperature gameplay.
This update makes altitude changes feel far more natural. Temperature bands can now blend smoothly as you climb or descend, while new coloured action-bar feedback makes changing conditions easy to read at a glance. It also includes a substantial round of Create Aeronautics/Sable compatibility, shelter, config, and diagnostic improvements.
_New configs are recommended to benefit from the updated defaults and clearer layout, but are not required - existing configs migrate new settings while preserving existing band setups._
## Added
- Smooth altitude gradients with
NONE,LINEAR, andBOUNDARYmodes. BOUNDARYgradients as the default for newly generated configs.- Temperature-tinted altitude action-bar messages.
- Smooth action-bar fade in/out animations.
- Action-bar messages for every altitude band when using default config.
actionbarDisplayTicksto control action-bar display duration.- Optional
debugLoggingfor detailed diagnostics.
## Improved
- Create Aeronautics/Sable altitude, shelter, and heat-source compatibility.
- Shelter detection for assembled ships and partially enclosed spaces.
/coldsweat_altitude statusoutput with clearer altitude, shelter, Sable-coordinate, and thermal-source information.- Fresh config comments and automatic migration for existing configs.
## Fixed
- Incorrect shelter and thermal behaviour inside some Sable ship interiors.
- Leaves and foliage incorrectly contributing to shelter cover.
- Action-bar messages not appearing in Creative mode.
- 0.6.3 - Fixed Cold Sweat 2.4.1 compatibility**
- Fixed a crash caused by the Sable temperature/hearth compatibility path after updating Cold Sweat to 2.4.1
- Restored Sable contraption support for heat sources and hearth effects on newer Cold Sweat versions until Cold Sweat support it
- REQUIRES COLD SWEAT 2.4.1**
- Fixed a dedicated server crash in the Sable compatibility path
- Fixed dedicated-server Sable shelter handling
- Fixed creative-flight edge cases where Sable shelter could drop unexpectedly inside contraptions
- Improved Cold Sweat modifier handling for altitude temperature updates.
- Fixed
/coldsweat_altitude statusand/coldsweat_altitude listchat encoding issues on 1.21.1. - Default generated config now uses plain-text warning messages again for user friendliness.
- Added inline config comments showing how to swap message fields to translation keys if desired.
Testing:
- Verified default config behavior in multiple altitude bands.
- Verified campfires still add heat correctly at Y100 (
surface) and Y303 (low_sky). - Verified command output and build on NeoForge 1.21.1.
0.6 Changelog
Added i18n support for public-facing and command-facing UI text.
Command output and built-in mod messages are now moved into lang files, making them easier to translate and maintain.
Config-driven messages can now also use translation keys. onEnterMessage and actionbarMessage still support normal plain text, but they can now also point to lang entries for localized packs.
The generated config now includes inline examples showing how translation keys can be used for message fields.
Useful config key examples currently included by default:
onEnterMessage = "coldsweat_altitude.band.low_sky.on_enter"
actionbarMessage = "coldsweat_altitude.band.low_sky.actionbar"
onEnterMessage = "coldsweat_altitude.band.extreme_sky.on_enter"
actionbarMessage = "coldsweat_altitude.band.extreme_sky.actionbar"
And the matching lang keys currently shipped are:
coldsweat_altitude.band.low_sky.on_enter
coldsweat_altitude.band.low_sky.actionbar
coldsweat_altitude.band.extreme_sky.on_enter
coldsweat_altitude.band.extreme_sky.actionbar
You are not limited to those keys. Any lang key will work in those config fields as long as it exists in a loaded lang file.
0.5 Changelog
Much Improved shelter detection and diagnostics.
Shelter detection now handles fully enclosed spaces more reliably, including Sable / Create: Aeronautics ship interiors. Fully sealed rooms should now correctly report 100% shelter.
Partial shelter detection has also been improved. Openings should now behave more consistently, with less random fluctuation when moving around inside the same room.
Added safer config handling for expensive scan values. If shelterCheckRadius, aeronauticsBurnerRange, or aeronauticsSteamVentRange are set above the safe maximum, they will now be rewritten back to the maximum value in the config file.
Added more useful status command output for debugging temperature behaviour, including altitude modifier values, shelter values, heat source totals, and detected Aeronautics heat sources.
Fixed cases where altitude modifiers were not reflected clearly in the status output, making it easier to tune configs and understand why the player is hot or cold.
Creative mode temperature readouts now correctly include this mod’s altitude, shelter, and heat-source modifiers, making creative testing much more accurate.
