Use formatting codes in anvils to style your item names
This is an unofficial port of Colorful Anvils by rogi27 for Minecraft 1.21.8+.
How to Use
- Place an item in an anvil
- Type your name with formatting codes (e.g.
&c&lFire Sword) - Take the item, it now has colored text
Check the gallery for examples of each formatting style.
No Character Limit
Vanilla Minecraft caps anvil input at 50 characters. This mod removes that cap entirely, so you can type long gradients, lore lines, and complex formatting without getting cut off.

Lore Support
Add lore lines using | as a separator:
&c&lFire Sword|&7Burns everything|&eDeals fire damage
The part before the first | becomes the item name, everything after it becomes lore lines. Renaming without a | clears any lore that was already there.
Server Config
The config file lives at config/colorfulanvils.json. It lets you toggle colors, formatting, hex, gradient, rainbow, and lore on or off individually. Permission support through fabric-permissions-api is available but off by default.
Permissions (when enabled):
colorfulanvils.use: basic formattingcolorfulanvils.lore: lore supportcolorfulanvils.gradient: gradient textcolorfulanvils.rainbow: rainbow text
Requirements

- One typo in the config no longer wipes your settings**
If
colorfulanvils.json had a small mistake, like a missing comma, the mod threw the whole file away and replaced it with defaults. Every setting you'd changed was gone. Now the file is left exactly as you wrote it, your settings stay the same, and the server log tells you what's wrong. /colorfulanvils reload tells you too, instead of saying it reloaded when it didn't.A typo like
"enableLore": tru used to be quietly read as "off". That gets caught now too.- Huge lore limits can't kick players anymore**
Setting
maxLoreLines above 256 let people make items that Minecraft can't send, which could kick players. 256 is Minecraft's own limit, so the setting stops there now.- No more nameless items**
Typing only lore, like
|&7Some lore, or a name that's only color codes, like &c, left the item with no name at all. Now it keeps its normal name. This works in the anvil and with /colorfulanvils apply.- No more blank lore lines**
Name|&7 added an empty lore line, and so did /colorfulanvils addlore &c. Lines with nothing to show are skipped now.Needs Fabric API. Text Placeholder API and Permissions API are bundled, so nothing extra to download.

- New: color names and short hex in gradients**
Gradients don't need hex codes anymore. Write
<gradient:red:gold>Sunset</gradient> and it just works. All 16 Minecraft colors are in: red, gold, aqua, light_purple, dark_blue, and the rest. They're the same colors as the & codes, so red in a gradient matches &c.Short hex works too, like
<gradient:#f00:#0f0>. You can even mix them: <gradient:red:#0f0:#0000ff>. Capital letters don't matter either.- Repairing a named item no longer messes up its name**
If you put a named item back in the anvil just to repair or enchant it, the mod could re-read the name and break it. A gradient name with a
| in it got split into lore, wiping your gradient and your old lore. A name with a literal &c in it suddenly turned red. Now, if you don't touch the name box, your item keeps exactly the name and lore it had.- /colorfulanvils addlore respects the server settings**
If a server turned lore off in the config,
addlore added lore anyway. Now it tells you lore is disabled.- /colorfulanvils preview shows your lore**
Previewing
Fire Sword|&7Burns everything used to show the whole thing on one line with the | in it. Now you see the name, with each lore line below it, exactly how the anvil will make it.Needs Fabric API. Text Placeholder API and Permissions API are bundled, so nothing extra to download.

- Lore works without colors now**
If you typed
Iron Sword|Old and rusty in the anvil, you got a sword literally named "Iron Sword|Old and rusty" and no lore. Lore only worked if there was a color code somewhere in the text. Now the | is all you need, colors or not.- Short hex codes before certain letters work**
&#f00Fire used to show up as plain text instead of red "Fire". The mod saw the "F" in "Fire" and thought it was part of the color code. This hit any name that started with a letter from A to F right after a short hex code. Now you get the color you asked for.- Colors and styles carry through gradients and rainbows**
In
&cFire <rainbow>Storm</rainbow> Blade, "Blade" lost its red and turned white. &l<rainbow>Storm</rainbow> wasn't bold either. Colors and styles now carry through gradients and rainbows like they do everywhere else.- Emoji in gradients and rainbows**
Emoji inside a gradient or rainbow used to break into two weird boxes. Now they show up properly.

- Minecraft 26.3 support**
There's a new jar for 26.3. Nothing about how you use the mod changed, it just works on the new version now.
- Important: the wrong jar could crash your game**
This is the big fix. The 1.21.8 jar claimed it supported "1.21.8 and anything newer." The trouble is Fabric reads version numbers as numbers, so
26.1, 26.2 and 26.3 all counted as "newer than 1.21.8." That jar would happily load on a 26.x server and then blow up, because 26.x changed how Minecraft's internals are named and old jars simply can't run there. The 26.2 jar had the same problem on 26.3.Every jar is now pinned to the versions it was actually built and tested for. Grab the wrong one and Fabric tells you at startup with a clear message instead of crashing you mid-game.
- Item names with angle brackets aren't mangled anymore**
Naming something
<blueprint> or <redstone rig used to confuse the mod. It was scanning for color tags by looking for <red and <blue without checking whether the tag was ever actually closed, so ordinary names got dragged into the formatter for no reason. Now it wants a proper complete tag before it steps in, and normal names containing < are left alone.- Gradients with a
|inside no longer break in half**
If you wrote
<gradient:#ff0000:#00ff00>Epic|Blade</gradient>, the mod split it at the | because that's the lore separator. You'd end up with a name ending in a broken tag and a lore line starting with a stray </gradient>.Now
| only splits off lore when it's actually outside a gradient or rainbow, so you can use it inside one as regular text. Real lore still works exactly as before, including on the same item.- /colorfulanvils colors got a proper layout**
The reference chart added in 2.7.0 came out as an unreadable brick. Two reasons: the rows were wider than the chat window so they wrapped and piled on top of each other, and the
&k magic demo was sitting in the middle of the row scrambling itself every frame, which made everything after it look corrupted. The chart is now a clean two-column grid with real section headers for colors, styles, hex, tags and lore. The scrambling
magic example moved to the very end where it can't bleed into anything. Every line was measured against the chat width, so the whole chart fits on one screen without wrapping.Needs Fabric API. Text Placeholder API and Permissions API are bundled, so nothing extra to download.
