📖 Wiki / Full Feature Guide → https://cozysimprovedmobs.netlify.app/

Craft a Wolf Care Guide with a Book and Stick for practical instructions in-game.

Why Players Install

  • Never lose a best friend: Tamed wolves drop a Wolf Collar into their owner's inventory on death. Use it on a block to revive your wolf. No more needing to leave your pets at home for safety.
  • Bonding that matters: Pet, scratch, and interact (sneak + right-click with an empty hand) with visible progress and affectionate feedback.
  • Unique companions: Randomized stats (health, attack, speed, gift chance, wander range), class (Hunter/Gatherer), and optional gender.
  • Roles with real behavior: Hunters gift items after kills; Gatherers dig up gifts and deliver them to you.
  • A home of their own: Link your wolf to a Wolf Bed and choose how they spend their day.
  • Everyday care: Keep your companion well fed, stock a Wolf Food Bowl, and enjoy a game of fetch with a Rubber Ball.
  • Expressive behavior: Wolves emote based on weather, time, and their bond with their owner. They react to the world, teleport smartly, show affection, and follow when tempted with food.
  • Multiplayer friendly: Optional friendly-fire protection and owner-only breeding.

How It Works

  • Automatic upgrade: By default, vanilla wolves become Improved Wolves (keeps name, variant, owner, and collar color).
  • Custom taming: Use Ancient Bones. They drop from skeletons or can be traded from clerics. Nether and End Wolves use them too; Wither Wolves need Ancient Wither Bones. Vanilla bone taming can be enabled in config, but does not bypass a Wither Wolf's special bone requirement.
  • Ancient Bone bonus: Use Ancient Bones on tamed wolves to grant them a short random positive effect.
  • Stat inspection: Sneak + right-click a tamed wolf with a Training Stick to view their full stat sheet. The Training Stick also links your wolf to a bed.

Classes & Gifts

  • Hunter: Stronger combat focus and gifts triggered by kills.
  • Gatherer: Digs up gifts and delivers them when nearby.

Care & Breeding

  • Everyday meals: Supported raw meat restores 25 hunger instead of healing instantly. Well-fed wolves gradually recover health, and feeding shows their health and hunger using compact icons.
  • No wasted dinner: A completely full wolf consumes nothing. Hunger does not deplete while unloaded, Peaceful prevents depletion and starvation, and starvation cannot reduce a wolf below 1 HP.
  • Separate breeding treats: Owners offer Wolf Treats to adults at full health with at least 80 hunger. Existing gender and breeding rules still apply. Offering a treat keeps a sitting wolf's sit command.
  • A family resemblance: Pups inherit health, attack and speed traits from their parents, with configurable small mutations. Coat and class come from either parent. Inherited traits survive taming; equipment and progression are not inherited.

Beds, Bowls & Home Life

  • Wolf Beds: Craft a bed in any of the sixteen wool colors. Use a Training Stick on your bed, then your owned wolf, to link them. Each wolf can have one home, and each bed can belong to one wolf.
  • Follow: Accompany you while retaining the home link.
  • Stay: Remain at home.
  • Wander: Explore the home area and return for occasional naps.
  • Guard: Patrol and defend home against eligible hostile monsters. Creepers, bosses, players, allies and neutral animals are excluded by default.
  • Your home, your rules: Choose a radius within the server's limits. Manual sitting takes priority over movement, food seeking and fetching.
  • Wolf Food Bowls: Hold three slots of supported raw food for automatic meals. Only the placing owner can open a bowl, and only that owner's wolves can eat from it. Eligible dropped food can also provide meals when enabled; hoppers cannot automate bowls.

Playtime & Second Chances

  • Fetch with Rubber Balls: Throw a reusable ball for an eligible nearby owned wolf. The first to reach it claims it, carries it back and drops it near you. Sitting, combat, changed commands or losing contact with the owner can interrupt play.
  • Wild-pack defense: Direct player attacks on a wild Improved Wolf can rally nearby wild wolves. The default cap is eight recruits; tamed wolves and creative/spectator attackers are excluded.
  • Optional bed revival: A valid linked bed can provide another chance when a revival collar is destroyed. This requires collar revival and is disabled by default.

Companions Beyond the Overworld

  • Nether Wolves: Found naturally in Crimson Forests. Stronger traits, fire immunity and fiery attacks. Tame them with Ancient Bones.
  • End Wolves: Found naturally on outer End islands, away from the central island. Dark coats, purple eyes, subtle purple particles and short-range displacement of eligible hostile targets. Tame them with Ancient Bones.
  • Wither Wolves: Found rarely in Nether fortresses. Skeletal coats, stronger traits, withering attacks and immunity to the Wither effect. Tame them with Ancient Wither Bones, rare drops from Wither Skeletons.

Supernatural types are separate from Hunter/Gatherer classes. Pups inherit one parent's complete type, never combined powers. Existing ordinary wolves stay ordinary, and travelling through portals does not change a wolf's type.

Wolf spawn eggs choose the local special type in eligible habitats; elsewhere they create ordinary wolves. Wither Wolves and Wither Skeletons leave each other alone naturally, while retaliation and owner defense remain possible.

Items

  • Ancient Bone (taming + buffs)
  • Ancient Bone Meal (applies bone meal multiple times per use)
  • Training Stick (stat inspection + bed linking)
  • Wolf Collar (revival)
  • Ancient Wither Bone (Wither Wolf taming; rare Wither Skeleton drop)
  • Wolf Treat (breeding; Wheat + Steak makes two)
  • Wolf Bed (three matching Wool above three Planks, with a Bone below the middle Plank)
  • Wolf Food Bowl (three Iron Ingots in a row, with a Bone directly below the middle Ingot)
  • Rubber Ball (fetching; Slimeball + Red Dye)
  • Wolf Care Guide (Book + Stick)

Compatibility & Requirements

  • Loaders: Fabric, Forge, NeoForge
  • Minecraft (Fabric/Forge): 26.3, 26.2, 26.1, 1.21.11, 1.21.1, 1.20.1, 1.19.2
  • Minecraft (NeoForge): 26.3, 26.2, 26.1, 1.21.11, 1.21.1
  • Java: 25 for 26.x; 21 for the listed 1.21.x versions; 17 for 1.20.1 and 1.19.2
  • Required (Fabric): Fabric API, Cloth Config
  • Optional (Fabric): Mod Menu (for in-game config UI)

Choose the file and dependencies matching your exact Minecraft version and loader. Install the mod on both client and server. Forge and NeoForge use their native configuration systems; Fabric dependencies are not required. Optional integration support depends on compatible versions being available, and compatibility with every pet mod is not guaranteed. Older Minecraft versions do not gain vanilla wolf armor.

Configuration

  • Fabric config file: config/cozys-improved-wolves.json
  • Forge/NeoForge config file: config/cozys_improved_wolves-common.toml
  • Reload command: /reloadcozywolvesconfig (server operators)
  • Owner controls: /cozywolves <wolf> follow|stay|wander|guard, plus radius, unlink and dropped-food controls

Server owners can customize care, breeding, inheritance, home behavior, spawning, supernatural abilities and the existing balance options. The Wolf Care Guide explains the controls; some settings require a restart.

⚠️ Important: Read Before Installing on Existing Worlds

This mod replaces vanilla wolves with custom wolf entities in order to support its features (personality, abilities, respawn system, etc.).

Uninstall warning

If you remove this mod and then load your world, wolves that were converted/managed by this mod may disappear permanently because the custom entity no longer exists without the mod installed.

Before uninstalling

  • Back up your world first
  • Close the world or stop the server, then use the matching closed-world wolf converter while Cozy is still installed
  • Confirm conversion completed successfully and verify your wolves before removing the mod
  • Do not open the world without the mod unless conversion has completed or you accept the risk of losing modded wolves
  • If you already removed the mod and loaded the world, recovery may only be possible from a backup

The converter restores living tamed wolves to vanilla-representable wolves. Supernatural powers, progression and mod-only items/blocks cannot remain after removal. It does not create backups or revive dead pets.

On Minecraft 1.19.2/1.20.1, vanilla can reset tamed-wolf health and attributes after removal. Keep Cozy installed if conversion refuses a case it cannot preserve.

Do not downgrade a world saved with 2.1.0 to an older mod version.

  • Tame them with Ancient Wither Bones, rare drops from Wither Skeletons.

  • Hunger and automatic meals**
  • Supported raw meat restores hunger, and well-fed wolves gradually regenerate health.
  • Three-slot Wolf Food Bowls provide meals for their owner’s wolves; eligible dropped food can also be eaten when enabled.

  • Link a bed using a Training Stick, then choose Follow, Stay, Wander or Guard and a home radius.

  • Wolf Treats and inherited traits**
  • Separate treats breed owner-authorized adults at full health with at least 80 hunger.
  • Pups inherit health, attack and speed, with configurable small mutations. Coat and class come from either parent.

  • Rubber Ball fetching**
  • Throw a reusable ball for nearby owned wolves. The first to reach it carries it back to you.
  • Sitting, combat or changed commands can interrupt play.

  • More ways to care**
  • A blue Wolf Care Guide, crafted with a Book + Stick.
  • Wild-pack defense and optional linked-bed revival when a collar is destroyed. Bed revival is disabled by default.

### Changed

  • Feeding and inspection**
  • Meals restore hunger instead of healing instantly or starting breeding.

  • Habitat-aware wolf spawn eggs**
  • Eggs select Nether, End or Wither Wolves in their eligible habitats; elsewhere they create ordinary wolves.

### Fixed

  • Treat interactions preserve a sitting wolf’s sit command, including rejected and offhand interactions.
  • Improved saved-world upgrades, vanilla-wolf conversion and collar revival while retaining supported pet data and equipment.
  • Failed conversion preserves the original wolf, and copied collars cannot duplicate living pets.

### Upgrade and uninstall notes

Back up your world using your preferred method before upgrading. Existing pets retain their names, owners, supported equipment, classes and progression.

  • NeoForge: 26.3, 26.2, 26.1, 1.21.11 and 1.21.1.
  • Use the JAR and dependencies matching your exact Minecraft version and loader. Optional integration support varies by target.

### Upgrade and uninstall notes

Back up your world using your preferred method before upgrading. Existing pets retain their names, owners, supported equipment, classes and progression.

Do not downgrade worlds saved with 2.1.0. Before uninstalling, use the matching closed-world wolf converter with Cozy still installed. Supernatural powers and mod-only features cannot remain after removal. On 1.19.2/1.20.1, keep Cozy installed if conversion refuses a pet whose health or attributes cannot be preserved.
# Cozy’s Improved Wolves 2.1.0 — Care, Homes & Supernatural Companions

Give your wolves a home, share a meal, and meet new companions in the Nether and End!

### Added

  • Nether Wolves**
  • Found naturally in Crimson Forests, with stronger traits, fire immunity and fiery attacks.
  • Tame them with Ancient Bones.

  • End Wolves**
  • Dark-coated wolves with purple eyes and subtle purple particles, found on outer End islands.
  • Can displace eligible hostile targets a short distance. Tame them with Ancient Bones.

  • Wither Wolves**
  • Rare Nether fortress companions with skeletal coats, withering attacks and immunity to the Wither effect.

  • Hunger pauses while unloaded. Peaceful prevents depletion and starvation, and starvation cannot reduce a wolf below 1 HP.

  • Wolf Beds and home modes**
  • Sixteen wool colors, with a distinct wolf-bed shape and a bone emblem.
  • Link a bed using a Training Stick, then choose Follow, Stay, Wander or Guard and a home radius.
  • Guard wolves defend against eligible hostile monsters; wandering wolves return for occasional naps.

  • Wolf Treats and inherited traits**
  • Separate treats breed owner-authorized adults at full health with at least 80 hunger.
  • Pups inherit health, attack and speed, with configurable small mutations. Coat and class come from either parent.
  • Pups inherit one parent’s complete supernatural type, never combined powers. Traits survive taming, saving and revival.

  • Feeding shows compact health/hunger icons; Training Stick inspection retains detailed stats and adds home linking.

  • Habitat-aware wolf spawn eggs**
  • Eggs select Nether, End or Wither Wolves in their eligible habitats; elsewhere they create ordinary wolves.
  • Existing ordinary pets stay ordinary, and travelling between dimensions does not change their type.

### Fixed

  • Treat interactions preserve a sitting wolf’s sit command, including rejected and offhand interactions.
  • Improved saved-world upgrades, vanilla-wolf conversion and collar revival while retaining supported pet data and equipment.
  • Failed conversion preserves the original wolf, and copied collars cannot duplicate living pets.

### Compatibility

  • Fabric and Forge: 26.3, 26.2, 26.1, 1.21.11, 1.21.1, 1.20.1 and 1.19.2.
