Exposure: Space
Astrophotography progression for Exposure. Point your camera at the night sky, hunt real cosmic objects, develop the photos and fill your personal star album.
What does it add?
π 256+ real cosmic objects β from the Moon's craters to Sagittarius A*. Planets, exoplanets, moons, comets, asteroids, star clusters, nebulae, galaxies, pulsars, quasars and a few anomalies. Every single one has its own pixel-art texture, description and reward.

π· Telescopic lenses (5 tiers) β from the humble Bad lens to the Sculk lens that sees absolutely everything. Higher tiers reveal rarer, fainter objects.
π£ Space Filter β a camera attachment with deep space trapped in its glass. Required to capture cosmic objects; install it together with a lens.
πͺ Objects live in the actual sky. They appear on real night-sky positions, hide behind terrain, scale with your zoom β and not every object shows up every night. Some, like Halley's Comet, are a once-in-a-lifetime sight. The ISS, Hubble and comets even move across the sky in real time.
π Night sky events β some nights a Meteor Shower, an Aurora Storm or a Deep Sky Night rolls in: appearance chances get boosted, the Analyzer works up to 2Γ faster, and event-exclusive objects show up β fireballs, auroras, STEVE, the Zodiacal Light and the Gegenschein exist only during their events.
π‘ Night Analyzer β a craftable observatory block. Right-click it to learn what's happening in the sky tonight: event name, luck and analysis multipliers, how many exclusive objects are up there. No chat spam β checking the sky is part of the hobby.
π Photo Analyzer β an astronomer's desk with a spectrum screen (and Wi-Fi, obviously). Feed it a developed photograph: it identifies the object, writes it into your album and pays out rewards into 8 output slots.

π Cosmic Album β a craftable book (amethyst + paper + book + leather) that collects every object you've studied as a glued-in polaroid: photo, story, object type, and a "Visit on Wikipedia" link for the real thing. Fill all 200+ pages if you dare.
π§ Villager trades β cartographers (levels 4β5) and wandering traders sell archival photographs of cosmic objects, ready for the Analyzer. Event-exclusive ones are never sold β those you earn.
π Advancements β a full tree: first analysis, halfway there, complete album, event photography and a few secrets.
π Repeat rewards β by default, an object's full reward becomes available again every 5 in-game days (configurable, or disable it entirely).
π Dark-room friendly β Exposure's Lightroom normally refuses to print in the dark. Cosmic photos are exempt: astrophotography should be developed at night.
π Camera Stand support β aim and capture through a mounted camera.
πͺ Cosmic Leftover β a creative-only snack that fills your hunger and unlocks the entire album in one bite.
βοΈ Fully data-driven β objects and events are JSON in a datapack (data/<ns>/cosmic_object/, data/<ns>/cosmic_event/), plus live-editable external folders (config/exposure_space/objects/, config/exposure_space/events/) for adding your own without rebuilding anything. Admins get /cosmicevent. ModMenu config screen included.
Requirements
| Mod | Why |
|---|---|
| Exposure | the camera itself |
| Exposure: Expanded | tier-1 telescopic lens |
| Architectury API, Prism, Cloth Config | libraries |
Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric & NeoForge. On Fabric you also need Fabric API; ModMenu optional but recommended.
Quick start
- Craft a Space Filter and a Telescopic Lens, install both on your camera.
- Wait for night, raise the viewfinder and scan the sky β found objects get a target lock.
- Take the shot, develop the film, print the photo in a Lightroom.
- Put the photograph into the Photo Analyzer and collect your reward.
- Craft the Cosmic Album and admire your growing collection.
All Versions
+ Add Version- Every object redrawn**
All 256 icons are drawn again in one style: light from the top left, no black outline, and each one is drawn to look like the real object.
- Stars are coloured by their spectral class and sized by brightness. Doubles show both stars (Albireo is gold and blue), supergiants are discs, TRAPPIST-1 has its seven planets.
- Jupiter has the Great Red Spot, Saturn the Cassini gap, Pluto the heart, and Uranus lies on its side.
- Exoplanets get their measured colours where they're known: HD 189733 b is cobalt blue, GJ 504 b is magenta.
- Nebulae and galaxies look like their famous photos, the Pillars of Creation, the Horsehead, Andromeda almost edge-on.
- Sgr A* and M87* look like the Event Horizon Telescope images. LGM-1 is the pulse plot off the Unknown Pleasures cover.
- Sky**
- Stars twinkle, more near the horizon. Planets don't.
- Small bright objects (stars, pulsars, quasars) get a soft glow in their own colour.
- Low in the sky everything is dimmer and redder, like through real air.
- Comet icons no longer have a painted tail. The game draws the tail along the path the comet actually moves, same as the fireballs.
- Viewfinder**
- Lock brackets snap onto the target. Under them a card shows the object's icon, name, type and tier, and a signal meter fills as you centre it.
- Screens, blocks and lenses**
- The Analyzer has its own screen instead of the grey vanilla box. Wooden frame like the block, and the photo slot sits in a starry window.
- The Cosmic Album looks like an actual book now, with a purple leather cover and paper pages.
- The Night Analyzer got the same frame and a dark console screen.
- Both analyzer blocks are redrawn. While a photo is being analyzed the screen on top lights up with a star in the crosshair and a spectrum.
- Telescopic lenses are redrawn to match Exposure's own gear: grey barrel, round glass. You tell the tier by the glass.
- Fixes**
- The Fabric version loaded with any Exposure version, but it needs 1.9+ (on 1.8 the attachment slots broke). It now asks for 1.9+.
Nothing in your world changes, studied entries keep their progress.
Requires Exposure 1.9+ and Architectury. Dedicated servers fine, same jar both sides.

- Events you can actually see**
Every night-sky event now draws something. Raise the viewfinder (filter + lens, at night, same as the objects) or turn on Stellar View:
- Meteor Shower** β streaks fanning out from a radiant all night, a few fireballs that flare up and leave a train. The radiant moves to a new spot every shower night.
- Aurora Storm** β three curtains over one side of the horizon, rippling, green at the foot and violet at the top.
- Deep Sky Night** β the Milky Way, from horizon to horizon, dark rift and all.
The Night Analyzer says when there's something up there. None of it changes what objects are up or what a photo matches, it's just light.
- Datapacks**
It's a
sky block in the event json: meteors, aurora, milky_way, any mix, every field optional. Colours, rate, radiant, span, tilt β all in the guide. "sky": { "aurora": {} } is enough. Textures are white on transparent in textures/sky/ and can be swapped by a resource pack.- Performance**
- Every object in the sky used to be its own draw call with its own texture. On an event night with luck x2.5 that was a couple of hundred per frame. The icons are now stitched into one atlas when the catalog syncs and the whole sky goes out in one call.
- Objects don't pop any more. Each one fades in and out (dusk, dawn, viewfinder up or down), and with Stellar View on, raising a camera whose lens sees a different set cross-fades between the two instead of blinking. The event sky fades with the layer.
- Other**
- New Cosmic Album icon. The old one looked like a folder.
Nothing in your world changes, studied entries keep their progress.

- The Telescopic Lens is craftable again β for everyone.**
The tier-2 lens recipe asked for the tier-1 lens from **Exposure: Expanded**, a mod listed as
optional. Minecraft quietly drops any recipe containing an unknown item, so without Expanded
installed the recipe simply vanished β no entry in JEI, no lens, and since every higher tier is
built from the one below, no telescope progression at all. Thanks to everyone who reported the
mysteriously missing recipe.
The middle slot now takes **Exposure: Expanded's lens if you have it, or a plain spyglass if you
don't**, so the upgrade path is intact for Expanded users and the whole lens tree works in a
vanilla Exposure setup. Nothing else about the recipe changed.
- Everyone should update β on older versions the lenses are uncraftable without Expanded.*

The first release. Technically everything is a new feature, but here you go:
Added
The universe. All of it. Well, 100 objects of it β planets, exoplanets, moons, comets,
nebulae, galaxies, pulsars, quasars, one very suspicious interstellar cigar ('Oumuamua)
and The Great Void, which is nothing, and we still drew a texture for it.
5 tiers of telescopic lenses. The last one is powered by sculk. Do not ask how.
The warden doesn't know either.
Space Filter β a camera attachment with an entire galaxy trapped in the glass.
Legally obtained.
Photo Analyzer β an astronomer's desk with a spectrum screen and a Wi-Fi icon.
There is no router in Minecraft. It connects anyway.
Personal Space Catalog (press G) β now with scrollbars, because 100 objects
did not fit. Who could have known.
Reward decay β farming Jupiter photos nerfs your loot like 100% β 30% β 9% β dust.
Touch grass for 5 in-game days and the universe forgives you.
Dark-room printing β the Lightroom now accepts cosmic photos at night.
Astronomers everywhere: "finally."
Camera Stand support β tripods are no longer decorative.
Halley's Comet appears roughly once per 28 in-game nights. See you in 2061.
Cosmic Leftover β a creative-only snack that unlocks the entire catalog.
Tastes like stardust and cheating.
Fixed
Nothing. There was nothing before this. That's how time works.
Known issues
temno still hasn't written a single line of code himself.
