Gathering Chunks: Chunk by Chunk, Ryvione's Fork

A maintained fork bringing Chunk by Chunk to the latest Minecraft versions.

Official Discord | Latest Release

Note: If you encounter bugs in versions published on Modrinth, check the #beta-versions channel on our Discord or grab the latest build from GitHub. Fixes are often shipped there before reaching Modrinth.

About

Start with a single chunk and expand your world chunk by chunk. Gathering Chunks turns world generation into a resource-gathering progression, find chests, craft Chunk Spawners, and unlock new terrain, chunk by chunk as you grow.

Why This Fork?

The original Chunk by Chunk by immortius is an excellent mod that deserves to stay alive. With the upstream project appearing discontinued (last update over a year ago), this fork picks up the torch:

  • Keeps the mod updated for current Minecraft versions
  • Currently supports Fabric and NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1 (NOT 1.21.11!!)
  • Future support planned for newer versions
  • Forge will not be supported in this fork. For Forge 1.20.1, visit the official mod page

How to Play

  1. Start small. You begin with a single chunk in an otherwise empty world.
  2. Find chests. Special chests are scattered around containing items needed to craft Chunk Spawners.
  3. Expand. Place Chunk Spawners next to empty chunks and activate them to unlock new terrain.
  4. Progress. Use World Cores, Forges, Scanners, and Menders to manage and automate your growing world.

NOTE FOR THE VERSION CHECKING:

Starting from version 2.2.5 (Beta 3.4, Hotfix 2), the mod performs an automatic version check on launch to notify you of available updates.

What is sent: Your current mod version number only. What is not sent: No personal information, IP addresses, game data, or any other identifiable data.

The entire update checking implementation is open source. You can audit it yourself by reviewing UpdateChecker.java in the GitHub repository. The code is straightforward and requires only basic programming knowledge to verify.

# Gathering Chunks - 2.2.5 Beta 5 - Development Snapshot 3

> THIS IS AN **ALPHA BUILD WHICH MEANS THAT IT IS NOT READY FOR PRODUCTION!** This is the first version for Minecraft 1.21.11, so bugs are expected. **Back up your worlds before testing!**

## New features

  • Minecraft 1.21.11 support:** Ported to 1.21.11.
  • World-specific settings:** every world now has its own settings file. You can configure them using the new **GC Settings** button when creating a world.
  • New settings menu:** access Debug and Performance options from the main menu.
  • Better spawn themes:** your starting theme now matches the biome you spawn in.

## Fixes

  • Ocean chunks fixed:** ocean spawners now generate actual ocean chunks.
  • No more repeated starting spawns:** restarting a world no longer repeats the initial spawn.
  • Chunk loading fixes:** fixed several issues that could leave chunks loaded or stop spawning from finishing.
  • Scanner coordinates fixed:** the World Scanner and Cave Scanner now show the correct chunk coordinates.
  • Server lag reduced:** fixed a major ChestTracker issue that could freeze the server.

## Performance

  • Chunk copying is 25 to 30% faster**
  • Starting spawn search is around 75% faster**
  • Less background work:** the progression helper and rain filling system are now more efficient.

## Important notes

  • World settings:** most settings become locked after world creation. Some options remain editable, and certain changes only affect newly generated chunks.
  • Server settings:** multiplayer clients automatically receive the server's settings.
  • Slow server warning:** creating a world on a very slow machine may cause the server to time out while searching for the starting spawn. Disabling the server watchdog with max-tick-time=-1 in server.properties is a possible workaround.

## Known issues

This is an early alpha, so bugs and compatibility issues are expected. Please report anything unusual!

# 2.2.5 Beta 5 - Development Snapshot

> ⚠️ **DEVELOPMENT SNAPSHOT — not ready for production.** Features are still in development and things may break. **Back up your worlds before using this build.**

## Fixes

### World generation & chunks
  • Deleted chunks can no longer be regenerated by any spawner**: the deleted-but-marked protection from the previous snapshot was silently inert: it relied on a session-only flag that was never populated in the overworld and reset on every restart, so erased chunks could be rebuilt by *any* spawner block. Spawn records are now **persisted per world** (and survive restarts), and the spawner path hard-refuses deleted chunks. The **World Mender** remains the only tool that can rebuild them.

  • Sealed-world spawner error cascade fixed**: using a Chunk Spawner in a sealed world no longer fails with "No empty adjacent chunks to expand into" followed by a raw untranslated invalid_level_or_generator message. Unspawned sealed chunks are classified as empty again, so expansion from your own chunk works normally; deleted chunks in sealed worlds now produce a single clear message instead of the cascade.

  • Flowing water no longer survives chunk regeneration**: erased chunks containing waterfalls, rivers or roofed water columns regenerate cleanly instead of leaving floating water columns/waterfalls and water-filled holes going straight up to the void. Lava falls included. *(Carried over from the previous snapshot's known issues.)*

  • Themed start no longer dominates the world** — plain Chunk Spawners / Unstable Chunk Spawners now generate the world's real seed-based biomes instead of inheriting the initial theme. Already-affected saves are repaired automatically on load (no NBT surgery needed).

  • Sky/void dimensions now use real noise settings** — a new mixin (NoiseSettingsFixMixin) replaces the vanilla dummy noise settings the sky generator was inheriting, fixing broken terrain behavior in sky worlds.

  • /locate no longer hangs** — structure searches in the sky dimension are now redirected to the dimension's effective generation level.

  • Structure data is now copied with gathered chunks** — spawned chunks carry their structure starts over from the generation dimension (improves structures actually existing where they should).

  • Origin chunk protection** — spawner blocks can no longer regenerate the deleted-but-marked origin chunk (World Mender remains the intended tool); sealed-world spawn logic also treats Sealed generation correctly.

### Config
  • initial_chunk_biomes now persists** — the biome selector writes to and reads from the central config (config/GatheringChunks/gatheringchunks.toml), including the dedicated-server path (config sync now serializes lists). New ListFieldMetadata in the config system.
  • Config screen labels fixed** — the GUI now resolves config.gatheringchunks.* lang keys instead of the stale config.chunkbychunk.* prefix (labels were silently falling back to raw keys).

### World Mender
  • Dormancy fix** — a mender that finds nothing to generate no longer sleeps for ~16 in-game hours. New option **emptyRescanInterval** (1–1200000 ticks, default **600 = 30 s**) controls how often dormant menders re-scan; set 1200000 to reproduce the old behavior. Old saves with a large saved Cooldown drain it once first.

### Spawner blocks
  • New refusal message for deleted chunks**: attempting to spawn into a deleted-but-marked chunk now shows: *"This chunk was already spawned and later erased. Only the World Mender can regenerate it."* (English for now; zh_cn falls back to English until translated.)

### Nether
  • Restored vanilla **Nether coordinate scale 8** (was incorrectly 1, so compass/coordinates were off).

### Chunk overwrite & ores
  • New **ChunkResourceTracker** (persisted per-world) tracks which chunks have been gathered and which ore positions were harvested — on overwrite, un-mined ore is preserved and mined ores are turned into Stones/Deepslate depending on depth. Preventing "Infinite Ore" Glitches.

## New features

  • Dev Mode** — new /gatheringchunks devmode [on|off] (OP) toggles verbose debug logging and unlocks debug subcommands.
  • /gatheringchunks debug chunk [x] [z]** (OP) — compares visible vs. generation dimension state at a chunk, for diagnosing spawn/generation mismatches.
  • /gatheringchunks config list [search]** (OP) — list config fields and current values, with filtering.
  • /gatheringchunks config set <field> <value>** (OP) — set a config value from chat and save it.
  • /gatheringchunksdev** (client-only) — toggles a version watermark HUD.
  • Perf guard** — chunk copying logs a [Perf] warning when a copy pass takes >200 ms.
  • Themed spawner source option** — ThemedSpawnerSource config: DIRECT (default) or RANDOM source chunk for themed spawners.

> **NOTE: I did NOT test Fabric & NeoForge on servers, only on Clients.**
> Gathering Chunks for Minecraft 26.1 & 1.21.11 is coming soon. There are a lot of API changes, which means I'll take a while to fully port the mod to those versions leading up to the 2.2.5 Release.

  • Available on Fabric and NeoForge**

### Bug Fixes

  • Player Spawn Persistence**: Fixed an issue where reconnecting players would always revert back to the initial spawn chunk after a server restart. Spawn states are now properly persisted.

  • Dimension Generation**: Added saving for custom dimension generation configurations, ensuring original source dimensions are remembered across server reloads.

  • Chunk Eraser Textures**: Resolved the broken pink-and-black missing textures for the Chunk Eraser block-item in inventory views on both Common and Fabric.

  • Mushroom Chunk Spawner Recipe**: Fixed the broken recipe that made the Mushroom chunk

### Changes & Improvements

  • Internal Cleanup**
Removed old, legacy Pale Garden spawner assets.

### Known Issues

The following issues are known and being tracked for the stable release:

  • Performance**: The mod may cause slowdowns on low-end CPUs.
  • World Scanner**: Manual scan mode can occasionally stall or fail to complete. Restarting the scan usually resolves it.
  • Dimension Sync** *(Nether/Overworld)*: Rare desync events or failed chunk transfers between dimensions are still possible.
  • Ocean Chunk Spawner**: May not behave as intended in all cases, occasionally spawning land chunks instead of ocean chunks.

> If you feel any recently added feature does not fit the direction of the mod or feels out of place, feedback is genuinely appreciated. The goal is to keep Gathering Chunks focused and high quality.

Found a bug or crash? Please report it [here](https://github.com/ryvione/Gathering-Chunks/Issues) with as much detail as possible, including logs.

### Bug Fixes
  • Cauldron Rain Filler**: Resolved a crash that could occur during world creation when the Cauldron Rain Filler was active. The root cause has been identified and patched.

### Changes & Improvements

  • Cave Scanner**
A new Cave Scanner has been introduced. It functions similarly to the World Scanner but is designed specifically for underground cave types, allowing you to identify and locate cave biomes within chunks.

  • Fragment Ores**
Fragment Ores have been added as a replacement for the chest-based system. The original chest method remains available as a toggle in the configuration file for those who prefer it.

  • Update Checker: Error Handling**
Improved robustness of the Update Checker. It will now handle failures gracefully when the API server is unreachable, rather than producing errors or crashes.

  • World Generation Optimization**
General optimizations have been applied to world generation to reduce overhead and improve performance during chunk loading.

  • Config Screen: Scroll Limit**
A scroll limit has been added to the configuration screen to prevent unintended endless scrolling behavior.

  • Biome Consistency Improvements**
Biome consistency has been improved, reducing irregularities in biome placement and transitions.

  • Biome Search Improvements**
The biome searching system has been refined for more accurate and reliable results.

  • Mountain Spawning**
Some adjustments have been made to mountain spawning behavior. Note that this system is still known to have issues and is being actively worked on.

  • Prevented Unstable Chunk spawner from corrupting worlds during overwrites
  • Fixed initial chunk spawn failures that resulted in pure void worlds

### Known Issues
  • Lightning rendering issues on certain generated chunks
## Gathering Chunks 2.2.5 - Beta 3.4 — Hotfix 2.5

## Major Changes & Additions

  • Added **Chunk Engine** (experimental, configurable)
  • Added **Chunk Eraser**
  • Added **Cherry Biome Chunk Spawner**
  • Added **Version Checker** to detect outdated mod versions
  • Optimized **Biome-Themed Chunk Spawning**
  • Improved and fixed **Config Menu**:
  • Uses sliders instead of repeated button clicks
  • No longer resets after restarting the game
  • Fixed Min/Max chunk depth settings
  • Fixed server config handling
  • Fixed options not applying correctly (Chest command, Progression Helper, Chunk Boundaries)

## World Forge & Generation Fixes

  • Fixed **World Scanner**:

  • Now functions correctly
  • Only scans generated chunks (intended behavior)
  • Fixed **World Forge logic**:

  • Dirt/soil now converts into fragments (instead of fragments into world cores)
  • Updated conversion ratios:

  • 8 stone → 1 fragment
  • 16 soil → 1 fragment
  • Fixed World Forge not accepting certain blocks
  • Fixed **Tree Placement during world creation**:

  • Chunks are checked for existing logs on generation
  • If no logs are found, 2 trees are placed as a fallback
  • After validation, future chunks are no longer checked
  • Fixed chunk generation edge case:

  • If a chunk’s top layer is entirely water, a plain chunk is generated instead

## Chunk Engine & Spawner Fixes

  • Fixed Chunk Engine:

  • No textures issue (Fabric still partially broken)
  • If the engine breaks, it now properly deletes the chunk
  • Fixed Chunk Spawner placement behavior:

  • Placing on an occupied chunk shows a confirmation warning
  • Placing in the void no longer overwrites existing chunks
  • Fixed Biome-Themed Chunk Spawners:

  • Correctly generate biome data instead of using the original world seed
  • Fixed biome chunks sometimes spawning as only water
  • Fixed biome-themed chunks failing to spawn entirely
  • Fixed Mushroom Chunk recipe

## Nether Fixes

  • Prevented **bedrock from spawning**
  • Removed **lava floor**
  • Fixed Nether chunk generation entirely
  • Fixed Nether-related fluid and chunk issues

## Fluid & Physics Fixes

  • Prevented fluids from flowing into the void:

  • FluidTick is intercepted
  • Flow is cancelled if the destination is void
  • Fixed water randomly stopping its flow inside chunks
  • Fixed Fabric-specific issue where water flowed into the void
  • Fixed biome-themed chunks generating unintended water

## Gameplay & Misc Fixes

  • Fixed always spawning in a Village even when disabled
  • Fixed lightning issues on chunks (partially resolved)
  • Fixed LAN world issue where coordinates were not saved, causing players to be kicked to spawn
  • Fixed Fabric issue where chunks disappeared when Chunk Engine was not present
  • Fixed Chunk Boundaries being enforced even when disabled
  • Fixed Progression Helper still working when disabled
  • Fixed Server config desync issues

## Known Issues

  • Lightning issues may still occur on some chunks
