MCA: Conversations

MCA: Conversations expands the dialogue and social systems of Minecraft Comes Alive: Reborn, giving villagers more to say, more ways to respond, and more reasons to remember the conversations you have with them.
Instead of treating conversation as a menu of repeatable buttons, Conversations turns villagers into more persistent characters. They develop individual interests and values, remember previous discussions, react to how you answer them, talk about events happening around their village, and can carry conversations across multiple encounters.
The goal is not to replace MCA Reborn's relationship system. Hearts remain MCA's authoritative relationship value. Conversations builds around it with additional context, memory, personality, and dialogue.
Features
More meaningful conversations
MCA's Chat interaction is expanded into a larger conversation hub covering topics such as:
- Everyday life and how their day is going
- Their profession and work
- Food and personal preferences
- Village life and local events
- Dreams, fears, feelings and regrets
- Personal history and interests
- Relationships and shared experiences
- Gossip, rumors and things happening around the village
Available topics depend on the villager and your relationship with them. Children and adults do not speak identically, professions influence relevant conversations, and relationship-specific topics only appear when they make sense.
Your replies matter
Many topics are full conversations rather than single dialogue lines.
A villager might tell you about a bad day, disagreement or personal concern, then let you decide how to respond. Supporting them, dismissing them, disagreeing with them, apologizing or pushing further can all lead somewhere different.
Importantly, simply asking a question does not automatically reward hearts. What matters is how you respond.
Some deeper responses also use deterministic dialogue checks influenced by your relationship, the villager's mood and other context. These can result in stronger successes, partial successes or in-character rebuffs.
Villagers remember you
Conversations can persist beyond the screen you currently have open.
Villagers can remember:
- Subjects you have discussed before
- Important choices or positions you took
- Whether you pushed past a boundary
- Whether you apologized afterward
- Promises you made
- Promises you kept or broke
- Important shared experiences
- Previous disagreements or unresolved tension
- How long you have known each other
- When you last spoke
Closing and reopening the conversation does not simply reroll everything into a different result.
Individual villager personalities
Two villagers with the same profession are no longer treated as interchangeable copies of one another.
Each villager receives stable personal characteristics generated from the world and their identity, including interests, values, comforts, aversions and tendencies in how they work, socialize and open up to other people.
These characteristics remain consistent across restarts and between players.
MCA personalities also influence how dialogue is worded. A crabby villager, an anxious villager and a peppy villager can approach the same subject very differently.
A relationship deeper than one number
MCA hearts remain the visible relationship value, but Conversations also tracks additional private context such as:
- Trust
- Respect
- Warmth
- Attraction where appropriate
- Tension
- Familiarity
These values do not replace hearts or directly grant them. They help determine how villagers respond, what they are comfortable discussing and how certain conversations resolve.
Living conversations
Villagers can occasionally bring something up themselves instead of waiting for the player to choose a topic.
They may remind you about:
- A promise that has come due
- An unresolved disagreement
- A conversation you left unfinished
- Something in their life that changed since you last spoke
- Important village news
This system is deliberately limited. Villagers will not constantly interrupt you, and they will not initiate conversations while sleeping, fighting, panicking or already occupied with another player. Players can also tell individual villagers to stop talking to them.
Villager initiative can be configured or disabled entirely.
Village gossip and local identity
Villages can develop persistent details of their own, such as traditions, values, landmarks, festivals, shared concerns and ongoing disagreements.
Villagers can also learn about events and pass information to one another. Information loses confidence as it travels, and personal information does not automatically become public knowledge.
News can include things such as:
- Marriages
- Deaths
- Births
- Arrivals and departures
- Quest events when supported integrations are installed
Villagers do not necessarily agree with each other about what happens around them.
Promises that actually mean something
When a conversation lets you promise something, the game only offers that promise when there is a real way to observe whether you fulfilled it.
For example, a promised delivery can be completed when the requested gift is actually given to the villager.
Promises can be remembered, fulfilled, missed or brought up again later. The system avoids pretending that you completed something the game had no way to detect.
Optional Chat Mode
Conversations can also let you talk to MCA villagers through Minecraft's normal chat box.
For example:
Hey Coralia! How was your day?
The mod attempts to understand the topic and routes it through the same dialogue system used by the normal interaction screen.
This is not AI or an LLM. Chat matching is deterministic and datapack-driven, using authored keywords, phrases, synonyms, typo tolerance and other matching rules.
You can address a villager by name, talk to the villager you are looking at, or continue speaking to your current conversation partner.
When the villager asks you to make a choice, numbered replies are also available if you would rather select an option than type a response yourself.
Chat mode can be configured or disabled.
Improved Conversation UI
The standard MCA interaction screen receives a responsive conversation card designed around Minecraft's own interface style.
Features include:
- Numbered dialogue choices
- Full-row mouse selection
- Top-row and Numpad number shortcuts
- Arrow-key navigation
- Enter and Space confirmation
- Home, End, Page Up and Page Down support
- Proper paging for large response lists
- Wrapped long responses
- Scroll support where necessary
- Visible keyboard focus
- Optional villager portrait
- Optional fast text reveal
- Full, reduced or disabled interface motion
- Configurable interface sound volume
The interface uses Minecraft's own GUI textures rather than a custom visual theme. Resource packs that reskin vanilla menus can therefore affect the Conversations interface naturally.
The UI also adapts to smaller screens and custom fonts rather than assuming a fixed menu size.
Profession-aware dialogue
Work conversations use the villager's actual profession wherever possible.
The mod includes specialized dialogue for vanilla professions as well as professions from a number of popular mods, including:
- MCA Reborn
- More Villagers
- Ars Nouveau
- Chef's Delight
- Ice and Fire
- Vampirism
- Werewolves
Unknown modded professions still receive generic profession-aware dialogue rather than simply failing to participate.
Optional Mod Integrations
MCA: Conversations works without any of the following mods, but provides additional context when they are installed.
MCA: Quests
Adds quest-aware dialogue and lets conversations respond to relevant quest activity.
Supported as an optional dependency from MCA: Quests 0.8+.
MCA: Reputation
Villagers can react to your public reputation and discuss deeds or incidents known around the village.
Supported as an optional dependency from MCA: Reputation 0.2+.
Townstead
Conversations can use Townstead information such as village culture, schedules, buildings and other settlement context while preserving Townstead's own RPG dialogue interface.
Supported versions: Townstead 0.7.5 to below 0.8.
Serene Seasons
Season-sensitive dialogue uses the actual Serene Seasons season when the mod is installed.
Without Serene Seasons, Conversations falls back to its own calendar-based seasonal context.
Configuration
MCA: Conversations is extensively configurable.
Configuration is separated by purpose:
- Common config: feature switches and debugging options
- Server config: gameplay rules synchronized from the server
- Client config: personal interface and presentation preferences
Server and pack authors can control systems such as dialogue features, dispositions, gossip, chat behavior, hearing distances, heart rewards, conversation limits, villager initiative and history retention.
Players can independently configure presentation options such as numbered responses, keyboard shortcuts, portraits, text reveal, interface movement and sound volume.
Datapack Support
A large portion of MCA: Conversations is data-driven.
Pack authors can add or modify conversations using datapacks, including their own:
- Dialogue topics
- Responses and branching conversations
- Chat-mode intents
- Synonym packs
- Personality conditions
- Relationship requirements
- Dialogue checks
- Conversation memories
- Progression
- Gossip
- Promise logic
- Disposition changes
- Custom dialogue actions and conditions
The mod builds on MCA Reborn's existing dialogue system rather than replacing it with a completely separate engine.
See the repository's DATAPACK.md for the complete authoring reference.
Languages
Currently complete:
- English (

This includes the main dialogue pool, interface text, personality variations, age-specific voices and chat-mode vocabulary.
Requirements
- Minecraft: 1.20.1
- Mod Loader: Forge 47.x
- MCA Reborn: 7.6.x or 7.7.x, version range
[7.6,8) - Java: 17
MCA: Conversations must be installed alongside Minecraft Comes Alive: Reborn.
For multiplayer, install the mod on both the server and connecting clients.
The current build is developed against MCA Reborn 7.7.0-beta.2 and maintains compatibility with the supported MCA 7.6 and 7.7 range.
Do not use MCA Reborn 7.7.0-beta.1. That MCA release contains its own broken production mixin metadata and fails independently of Conversations. Use 7.7.0-beta.2 or a newer compatible MCA release instead.
Architectury is not directly required by MCA: Conversations. Older MCA releases that require Architectury declare that dependency themselves.
For Modpack Authors
MCA: Conversations is designed to remain useful in both lightweight MCA setups and larger RPG or village-focused packs.
Optional integrations fail gracefully when their corresponding mods are absent, and most conversation content can be extended through datapacks without modifying the mod itself.
If you want MCA villagers to feel less like menus and more like persistent people who remember what has happened between you, MCA: Conversations is built for exactly that.

+ Add Version- MCA: Conversations 1.8.0 — September 30th, 2026**
This update makes relationships develop more naturally and brings Townstead’s daily village life into conversations.
- Strangers act like strangers:** Villagers you’ve never met no longer use your name or pretend you’re already friends. Greetings and goodbyes now match your relationship and the villager’s personality.
- Friendship develops over time:** Hearts still matter, but closer friendships also require familiarity, trust and meaningful contact across multiple days. Conversations and accepted gifts count toward contact days; simply opening the menu does not.
- Family relationships are recognized:** Parents, children, siblings and spouses receive appropriate dialogue. Your children address you as their parent, and unresolved arguments affect how villagers speak to you—even with a high heart total.
- More distinct relationships:** Acquaintances, friends, confidants and villagers you’ve upset each have their own greetings. Confidants can greet you privately, and respected strangers can acknowledge your village reputation.
- Quieter, more natural greetings:** Passing greetings are spaced out, and villagers continue their day unless you answer. Opening chat draws attention from at most three nearby villagers.
- Finished topics stop cluttering the menu:** Fully discussed topics are hidden for that player and villager by default. Repeatable subjects, including news, weather and check-ins, remain available.
- MCA: Crime support:** Villagers remember crimes they witnessed, and guards deliver warnings and respond to reports and apologies in their own personality. Custom dialogue can also respond to your criminal status.
With **Townstead** installed, villagers have more to discuss and respond more naturally to their circumstances:
- Eight new “Life here” topics:** Talk about their wellbeing, daily routine, trade, age, roots, home, village spirit and calendar. These topics work through both dialogue menus and typed chat.
- Needs and schedules shape conversations:** Busy or exhausted villagers may postpone longer discussions while still allowing small talk. Sleeping villagers and those dealing with emergencies are less likely to initiate conversations.
- Helpful gifts are remembered:** Villagers recognize gifts that actually relieve hunger, thirst or fatigue, without awarding extra hearts for the same gift.
- More local gossip:** Hear about villagers recovering from hardship, learning skills, advancing in their trade, celebrating birthdays, and changes to buildings or village spirit.
- Consistent seasons and festivals:** Conversations can follow Townstead’s calendar, including its holidays, instead of using a conflicting calendar.
- Expressive reactions:** Villagers can wave, clap, facepalm and show other reactions when Emotecraft is installed. Townstead’s dialogue screen also gains effects such as whispers and sleepy speech.

10are also supported. - Gold, high-contrast, and classic themes, plus configurable opacity, speaker-name accents, sound volume, and motion effects.
- New animations, UI sounds, selection feedback, and accessibility narration.
- Optional matching number badges and shortcuts for Townstead’s conversation screen.
### Improved
- Chat now displays every available response instead of hiding choices after the first five.
- Recognized villager names appear bold and gold for easier reading.
- Long questions, multi-line answers, custom fonts, and different screen sizes now lay out correctly.
- Keyboard and mouse focus behave more naturally, with selected rows gently expanding without shifting the menu.
- Responses lock immediately after selection to prevent accidental duplicate answers.
- English and Portuguese-Brazilian localization has been expanded for the new interface.
### Fixed
- Fixed custom fonts causing overlapping text.
- Fixed long conversations extending beyond the safe screen area.
- Fixed stale conversation data sometimes rejecting a valid response after switching villagers.
- Fixed stationary mouse pointers overriding keyboard navigation.
- Fixed unnecessary sounds and narration playing when the selected response had not changed.
### Compatibility
- Network protocol remains **2**, with no changes to dialogue outcomes or server authority.
- MCA’s original interface remains available as a fallback if the enhanced UI cannot load.
- Townstead remains completely optional.
A massive conversation overhaul focused on making villagers feel **more coherent, individual, persistent, and aware of their lives, relationships, work, and surroundings**.
### Conversations Now Actually Flow
The conversation system has been extensively rebuilt around one rule:
- Every player response should make sense as an answer to what the villager just said.**
- Reworked numerous branches that previously shared inappropriate or unrelated replies.
- Responses now account for whether a villager was happy, upset, guarded, grieving, dismissive, affectionate, or otherwise reacting to the conversation.
- Reputation conversations now give appropriate options depending on whether the village likes you, dislikes you, barely knows you, or has an unresolved issue with you.
- Check-ins now respond properly to festivals, injuries, sleeplessness, flirting, bad moods, and other circumstances.
- Deep-topic rebuffs now lead to apologies, clarification, or backing off instead of continuing as though the conversation went well.
- Food, village, neighbour, news, rumours, and several other conversation funnels have been rebuilt around what was actually said.
Automated checks now prevent incoherent reply combinations from being added in future updates.
### Much Deeper Profession Conversations
All **37 supported professions** now have conversations written specifically for their work.
Instead of every profession sharing generic replies, villagers can discuss:
- What they are working on.
- How their craft is done.
- What makes the work difficult.
- What risks or responsibilities it carries.
- What the village gets from their work.
- What they hope to do with it in the future.
Each profession now has its own questions, responses, follow-ups, plans, and work situations.
Professions added by optional mods remain optional and are cleanly separated from the core content.
### Fixed Missing Profession Conversations
Fixed a major issue where **half of the generated work conversations could never appear**.
Eighteen professions were affected, including librarians, masons, shepherds, toolsmiths, weaponsmiths, miners, priests, scribes, and several modded professions.
All authored work scenes are now reachable.
### Villagers Now Build a Personal History
Villagers can now accumulate a more persistent conversational life instead of behaving like freshly generated characters every time you speak to them.
Each villager receives a stable individual profile containing things such as:
- Interests.
- Values.
- Comforts.
- Aversions.
- Work style.
- Social style.
- Willingness to disclose personal information.
Profiles are stable across restarts, renaming, relocation, and different players talking to the same villager.
### Situations, Threads & Promises
Villagers can now remember things that are actually happening in their lives.
The new history system supports:
- Ongoing situations.
- Conversations left unfinished.
- Things the vi
A major conversation-quality update focused on **consistency, deeper dialogue, better personality expression, MCA: Reputation integration, and fixing dozens of conversation branches that did not behave as intended**.
### Dialogue Is Now Consistent Everywhere
- Villager replies now show the **same sentence** in:
- The conversation screen.
- Chat.
- Text-to-speech.
- Nearby players now hear the same version of a villager's response instead of each client randomly choosing a different line.
- Fixed thousands of dialogue variants that existed in the files but could never actually appear.
- Improved reply-delay timing so dedicated servers no longer base the delay on the length of an internal translation key.
### MCA: Reputation Integration
When **MCA: Reputation** is installed, villagers can now actually talk about your public reputation.
- Villagers can gossip about deeds recorded by Reputation.
- Quest-related gossip is no longer duplicated between Conversations and Reputation.
- Added a new Village topic:
- "What do people think of me around here?"**
- Villagers can discuss:
- Your reputation tier.
- Whether the village generally likes or dislikes you.
- Recent deeds they know about.
- Unresolved problems involving you.
- Some conversations allow you to publicly apologize for something you did.
- Your response to criticism can affect the conversation.
Without MCA: Reputation installed, these features simply remain unavailable.
### Every Topic Is Now a Real Conversation
The remaining simple one-click topics have been converted into proper branching conversations.
Topics such as:
- Family.
- Feelings.
- Your relationship.
- Memories.
- Worries.
- The future.
now let you actually respond instead of ending immediately after the villager's first line.
Simply asking a question **no longer rewards hearts**. What matters is how you respond.
### Better Secrets
Secret conversations have been rewritten to make more sense.
- Villagers no longer reveal the secret **before you agree to hear it**.
- Accepting now actually reveals the secret.
- Declining has proper responses and does not incorrectly advance the relationship.
- Asking whether anyone else knows the secret is no longer treated as betrayal.
- Children can no longer be asked to keep inappropriate adult secrets.
### Promises Can Be Broken
Villagers now remember when you promise to support them and then fail to follow through.
- Broken promises can affect **trust and tension**.
- The first missed promise does not directly remove hearts.
- Some conversations offer a chance to:
- Admit you failed them.
- Offer support now.
- Refuse to make excuses.
- Keeping promises continues to be recognized normally.
### Deeper Conversations
Several deeper topics have been expanded.
- Strong conversation successes can now reveal **additional information** instead of immediately ending.
- Villagers respond differently when you push after
