Want something a little cooler? Try Frostiful!

Features

Scorchful is a Vanilla+ survival mod focused on Heat and Desert Survival. This mod increases the difficulty of the survival experience in warm biomes and The Nether.

Keeping Wet and Staying Cool

A player wearing a Sun Hat and turtle armor drinking from a water skin.
A player wearing a Sun Hat and Turtle Armor drinking from a water skin.

Scorchful makes exposure to the Sun more dangerous in the warm areas of the world like Jungles, Deserts, Savannas, and Badlands. When outside the protection of Shade, you will grow warmer over time. As you get warmer, you will face the increasing effects of heatstroke: including weakness, hunger, and mining fatigue.

Overcome the heat by Staying Wet. You can go for a dip in the pond or river, or even just dunk a bucket of water on yourself. If you drink water from Potions, Water Bottles, certain foods, or the new Water Skin and Cactus Juice, you are also able to Sweat, which provides the same cooling benefit as being wet!

Enhanced Nether Survival

A Piglin protecting its patch of Warped Lillies.
A Piglin protecting its patch of Warped Lillies.

The Nether is an extreme environment that brings many new perils. It is hotter than even the warmest places of the Overworld, which means water cannot remain in its liquid form so easily there. To stay cool, you will need to carry your own water with you to drink, or you can make use of the Nether Lillies found in the Crimson Forest, Warped Forest, and occasionally the Nether Wastes.

Crimson Lillies evolved in the harsh conditions of The Nether to have large root systems that can absorb the scant moisture from the surrounding Netherrack. They collect and use this moisture as a weapon against many of the Fire-born monsters of The Nether that might threaten it. While this may be an effective defense against many of the native inhabitants of The Nether, it is quite useful to us! Step on the Crimson Lillies for a quick soak, or harvest the water of the more tame Warped Lillies for long-term Nether survival.

Sandstorms

The visual and gameplay effects of sandstorms.
A Sandstorm begins in the Desert.

Sandstorms now form in Deserts and Badlands during weather events. When this happens, a thick sand fog will envelop the player, reducing their visibility but also blocking the heat of the Sun. This is not just a visual effect though. During sandstorms, mobs will be slowed, and Breezes will spawn. Sand Piles will also begin to accumulate and exposed Cauldrons will also fill with sand, allowing for Renewable Sand.

Not a fan of survival? No problem! The visual and audio effects of sandstorms can be downloaded as an entirely separate, standalone client-side mod in Immersive Storms!

Configuration

Scorchful is extremely highly configurable. It has an extensive config that lets you play around with different settings, disable features, or tweak the values of various things to adjust the difficulty of the mod. For example, you can tweak how much heating you get from fire, or disable the ability to throw fire charges. It also has a fair amount of datapack integrations with data-driven temperature effects and tags for things like Heat Resistance on armor and water from food and drink.

Wiki

Scorchful has a comprehensive player and developer wiki available at https://modded.wiki/w/Scorchful. Thanks to Patbox for hosting this!

Mod Integrations

Scorchful is designed to work alongside Frostiful, as its heat-focused sister mod. It also has out-of-the-box integration for Dehydration. Additionally, Thermoo Patches offers a suite of integration patches for many other mods, such as Origins, Fabric Seasons, Serene Seasons, Colorful Hearts, Overflowing Bars, Friends & Foes, and more!

  • Frostiful: Scorchful has native support for Frostiful, and both mods are designed to work alongside each other. I highly recommend using both!
  • Dehydration: If Dehydration is enabled, Scorchful will automatically disable the built-in thirst system and use Dehydration's instead.
  • Nature's Spirit: Pink Sand Piles and Pink Cauldrons will replace Sand Piles and Sand Cauldrons in Pink Sand biomes.
  • Colorful Hearts & Overflowing Bars: When using Thermoo Patches, burning Hearts will render on top of the new hearts from these mods. However, engulfed hearts currently do not work.
  • Enchantment Descriptions: A description is provided for the Rehydration enchantment for Armor.
  • Trinkets: The Sun Hat can be worn in the Hat slot, and provides the same benefits as when equipped in the regular head slot.
  • Farmer's Delight: Foods and Drinks from Farmer's Delight have been integrated to provide water, where it makes sense to do so.
  • Ad Astra: Netherite Space Suits provide Heat Resistance.

Compatibility

While this mod is designed to be as compatible as possible with other mods, sometimes issues will inevitably arise. Specific incompatibilities will be documented here and on the wiki as they become known.

  • Tough as Nails -- Incompatible due to multiple temperature bars and no integration for its thirst mechanic. No real point in using these mods together anyway when Frostiful exists!
  • PyroFrost -- PyroFrost has a temperature system different from Scorchful/Thermoo, so you will have 2 temperature bars.
  • EnvironmentZ -- Same as PyroFrost.
  • Thermite -- Same as PyrFrost.
  • Most shader packs will likely break the fog effects in a Desert or Badlands during a sandstorm, but the other effects (particles, sand piles, and cauldrons) will still work as normal.

Requirements

This mod uses Fabric API, Thermoo, Mod Menu, and YACL. For Quilt users: replace Fabric API with the Quilt Standard Libraries. Some older versions of Scorchful use Cloth Config instead - be sure to check the dependencies for the version you're downloading.

Requires Fabric API badge

Scorchful's Neoforge port is very experimental. It is still in alpha, and therefore may contain bugs and cause crashes. The port has also been created in a 'Fabric-like' manner using Forgified Fabric API and custom entry points to minimize the changes needed from the original version, which means that it may not work very well with the Neoforge ecosystem. Proceed with mild caution and please feel free to report issues to the issue tracker. Scorchful remains a Fabric-first mod and the Neoforge port is not likely to be updated to new Minecraft versions regularly.

# Scorchful 0.15.1 for Minecraft Neoforge 1.21.1

  • Fixed a "duplicate position" crash with Frostiful

# Scorchful 0.15.0 for Minecraft NeoForge 1.21.1

Scorchful has been ported to Neoforge! This port is possible thanks to [Forgified Fabric API](https://github.com/Sinytra/ForgifiedFabricAPI) and the [Yumi Minecraft Foundation Library](https://github.com/YumiProject/yumi-minecraft-foundation-library). Big thanks to them for making this relatively easy to do!

This port is roughly equivalent to the latest Scorchful for 1.21.1, 0.15.11+1.21.1.

  • Please note that this is an experimental Neoforge port of Scorchful.** It is still in alpha, and therefore may contain bugs and cause crashes. This port has also been created in a 'Fabric-like' manner using Forgified Fabric API and custom entry points to minimize the changes needed from the original version, which means that it may not work very well with the Neoforge ecosystem. Proceed with mild caution and please feel free to report issues to the [issue tracker](https://github.com/TheDeathlyCow/scorchful/issues).

  • Scorchful remains a Fabric-first mod and this port is not likely to be updated to new Minecraft versions regularly.**

# Scorchful 0.18.0 for Minecraft 26.1.x: Someone should dust in here

  • Added Dust and Red Dust, replacing the default drops of Sand Piles and Red Sand Piles, respectively.
  • The Sand Pile and Red Sand Pile block items can still be obtained with a silk touch tool.
  • Dust and Rest Dust can be crafted in a 2x2 pattern to produce Sand and Red Sand, respectively.
  • Dust and Rest Dust can be smelted into Quartz
  • Husks, Parched, and Camel Husks will drop 0-2 Dust on death, increasing by up to 1 per level of looting (exactly same rate as Husks drop Rotten Flesh).
  • The Fear mob effect now reduces armor by 50% per level of Fear, and recolors the armor bar to be red.
  • Drowned will now randomly spawn with Copper and Turtle Armor on Normal and Hard difficulty.
  • The equipping logic is similar to how Zombies will spawn with armor.
  • Drowned are 3x more likely to spawn with Copper armor than with Turtle.
  • Renamed the doSandPileAccumulation config option to enableSandPileAccumulation for consistency.
  • This change will be automatically applied to existing configs with schema version 8.
  • Fixed the Red Sand Cauldron not being properly pickaxe-mineable
  • Fixed full Sand Pile and Red Sand Pile blocks (8 layers) not dropping their respective full blocks.
  • Fixed an incorrect title for the Scorchful Creative Mode Tab.
  • Fixed Engulfed Hearts rendering incorrectly.

# Scorchful 0.17.0 for Minecraft 26.1.x: Deadlier Sandstorms

A first new content update for 26.1.x. This update aims to make sandstorms more dangerous to both make them more interesting and to align them better with the storms of Arrakis.

  • Breezes now spawn naturally in packs of 1-2 during Sandstorms (and Blizzards).
  • They will spawn during both the day and night.
  • This can be disabled via config, but is enabled by default.
  • Sandstorms can now be made suffocating.
  • This feature is _disabled_ by default.
  • When it is thundering, being outside in a sandstorm will cause the player to lose air.
  • When the player runs out of air, they will take suffocation damage (this is a custom damage type).
  • This does not apply to non-player mobs, as that would result in mass casualty events during every sandstorm, but it can be controlled with the entity-type tag #scorchful:suffocates_in_sandstorms.

# Scorchful 0.16.9 for Minecraft 26.1

Scorchful is now available for Minecraft 26.1. The LTS policy for Scorchful has been updated, I now plan only to support the first game drop of the current year. For example, I will be supporting 26.1.x, but not 26.2.x. This is to allow me to focus more on creating cool new stuff for Scorchful, rather than spending almost all of my available time chasing the latest version. If a cool new major update releases mid-year, I may choose to update to and support that instead.

Changelog:

  • Updated to 26.1
  • Striders now get some armor when they are warm
  • Added baby textures for Turtle Armor
  • Added baby textures for the Sun Hat
  • Fixed the Sun Hat rendering for specific humanoid mobs with meshes that are non-standard
  • This applies to Husk, Wither Skeleton, Piglin, Zombified Piglin, Piglin Brute, and Zombie Villager
  • These fixes are special cases and hardcoded, and will not work with modded humanoid mobs that have similar changes to their mesh.

# Scorchful 0.16.9 Pre-Release 1 for Minecraft 26.1

This is a first preview build of Scorchful for Minecraft 26.1. This early build has not yet been very thoroughly tested, and may still contain bugs, so it is released as an alpha pre-release.

  • Updated to 26.1
  • Striders now get some armour when theyre warm

# Scorchful 0.16.8 for Minecraft 1.21.11

  • Updated embedded Immersive Storms version from 1.5.0 -> 1.6.1

### Immersive Storms 1.6.0:

  • Added a new Black Rain weather effect to Pale Gardens
  • This only affects Pale Gardens, and not other Dense Fog biomes
  • Dark Forests, the Deep Dark, and other "Spooky" biomes are now affected by dense fog
  • Strong wind from sandstorms and blizzards now plays slightly muffled when indoors
  • Fog is now slightly less dense in most cases

### Immersive Storms 1.6.1:

  • Fixed rain particles from Particle Rain not being black when in the Pale Gardens
  • Fixed rain not being black in the Pale Gardens with Subtle Effects
# Scorchful 0.15.10+1.21.11

  • Switched to using a more resilient method for registering player attributes to prevent missing attribute crashes in modpacks
  • Fixed a bug that caused infinite Rehydration drink fills when not being warmed.
# Scorchful 0.16.7+1.21.11

  • Updated Immersive Storms version to 1.5.0
  • Remap Scorchful codebase to Mojmap to prepare for 26.1
  • Switched to using a more resilient method for registering player attributes to prevent missing attribute crashes in modpacks
  • Changed the ID of the Rehydration Efficiency attribute from scorchful:player.rehydration_efficiency to scorchful:rehydration_efficiency
  • This change has been aliased so existing worlds and datapacks will work.
  • Fixed a bug that caused infinite Rehydration drink fills when not being warmed.
  • Reduce the large amount of flashing with Immersive Storms & Distant Horizons
# Scorchful for Minecraft 1.21.11

This update brings Scorchful to 1.21.11. Per the LTS policy, Minecraft 1.21.10 is now unsupported. Note that the LTS Policy for Scorchful has also been updated, 1.21.1 will now receive only limited support for fixes and minor changes.

  • Added translations for Russian, thanks aiocringe!
  • Translated Scorchful to Ukrainian, thanks StarmanMine142!
  • Translated Scorchful to Ukrainian, thanks StarmanMine142!
  • Upgraded config schema version 6 -> 7.
  • Fixed some weird jumpiness in the soaking bar.
  • Fixed a bug in the config auto updater that caused some settings to be set to incorrect values.
  • To correct this bug, Schema V7 resets the following values in the temperature config to their default values, if the config was last saved using Scorchful 0.16.1: soakedTemperatureMultiplier, coolingFoodTemperatureMultiplier, humidBiomeSweatEfficiencyMultiplier, extraHumidBiomeSweatEfficiencyMultiplier, aridBiomeSweatEfficiencyMultiplier.
  • This is unfortunately destructive to those settings, but it was the best I could manage. If you did not update to 0.16.1, then your config will be upgraded correctly and these values will not be reset.
# The Config Overhaul

This update revamps nearly every single config option available in Scorchful. Many options that were once values have been converted into multipliers. This allows you to achieve the same effect, while still giving me room to change things behind the scenes without messing up your config settings. **All config files will be automatically upgraded and fixed to fit the new schema.** Some bugs were also fixed with this update.

Note that as part of this update, the config translations have been removed, as many of them changed too significantly for me to preserve. The other translations are fine, only the config translations have been affected.

## Bug Fixes

  • Fixed the post-processing shaders for Heat Stroke and Fear (again...).
  • Fixed untranslated Advancement titles and descriptions.

## Config Updates

  • Split the client config into two sections: 'Accessibility Settings' and 'Display Settings'.
  • Added the temperature, item, and entity config sections.
  • Removed the heating, combat, and thirst settings.
  • Added two new options to the temperature config: heatingMultiplier and coolingMultiplier. These allow you to easily configure all temperature changes of their respective class in one go, without needing to tediously set individual temperature sources.
  • The config schema version has been changed from 1 -> 6.

### Client Config Split

The client config was removed and split in two: 'Accessibility Settings' and 'Display Settings'. Accessibility settings contains all client-side only options that were added to make Scorchful more accessible to different groups of end users. This is where you will find the options to disable the sound temperature effect, disable effect post-processing features, and to tweak the darkness of the Sun Hat.

The display settings contains the other rendering settings like status bar overlays and drip particles.

### Converting Values to Float-Multipliers

Several new options based on floating-point multipliers were introduced where raw values used to be required. Existing values were renamed and normalized based on their original default value. This means that, for example, if you set the old onFireWarmRate option to 36, it would be renamed to burningTemperatureMultiplier and then divided by its original default value of 24 to get a final setting of 36 / 24 = 1.5. Or more simply, if you had "onFireWarmRate": 36, it was converted to burningTemperatureMultiplier: 1.5.

  • Patched Pink Sand from Nature's Spirit to integrate with Scorchful's Sandstorms
  • This patch is 1.21.1-exclusive, as Nature's Spirit is not on the latest drop. If/when that mod updates, the patch will also be brought to 1.21.10.
# YetAnother Update: Scorchful for Minecraft 1.21.10

  • Updated Scorchful to Minecraft 1.21.10.
  • Migrated from Cloth Config to YACL.

## Minecraft 1.21.9

Scorchful is now on Minecraft 1.21.10. Per the LTS policy, Minecraft 1.21.6-8 and 1.21.9 are now unsupported. This version is not compatible with 1.21.9, however a version of this mod does exist for 1.21.9.

## Migration to YACL

Scorchful is beginning a series of updates to address its very difficult-to-use config system. This update represents the first round of this, migrating away from Cloth Config towards YACL for a more robust config system. This will be followed with updates to the config structure itself, to create something that is both more stable and easy to use for both players and mod pack developers. As this will likely involve a lot of experimental changes, only once this update is fully complete will it be backported to Minecraft 1.21.1.

However, I plan to maintain config file compatibility throughout this process. Already, Cloth Config files from previous Minecraft versions will be updated to the new system. As files are updated and changed, they will also be made backwards-compatible with the old files, where possible.

## Minecraft 1.21.9

Scorchful is now on Minecraft 1.21.9. Per the LTS policy, Minecraft 1.21.6-8 are now unsupported. Note that I will quickly be moving on to 1.21.10, so 1.21.9 will not be supported for very long. This version has not been tested with 1.21.10, and it is suspected that it will not work.

  • Updated Immersive Storms version to support 1.21.6-1.21.8.
# Scorchful 0.15.7 for Minecraft 1.21.6+

This update ports Scorchful to Minecraft version 1.21.6. Per the LTS policy, Minecraft 1.21.5 is now unsupported. This version will likely work with versions 1.21.6-1.21.8, those these are untested as of writing.

  • Updated Scorchful to Minecraft 1.21.7.

## Immersive Storms Changes

The gameplay-facing changes from this update are seen only in Immersive Storms.

  • Storm fog has been made to look slightly "foggier", using new fog rendering functionality.
  • Sandstorm fog has been made much more orange.

# Scorchful for 1.21.5

Scorchful is now available for Minecraft 1.21.5. Per the LTS policy, Minecraft 1.21.4 is now unsupported.

  • Updated to Minecraft 1.21.5
  • Added a new Lung Capacity attribute to control the Water Breathing effect of turtle armor
  • Removed the config option waterBreathingDurationPerTurtleArmorPieceSeconds
  • Added the config option turtleArmorLungCapacityMultiplier
  • Integrated Immersive Storms into Scorchful

## Immersive Storms

Immersive Storms is a new mod that allows you to use the Sandstorm feature of Scorchful in a standalone mod. It also has several new changes and features for Sandstorms and related storm effects. You can get Immersive Storms here: https://modrinth.com/mod/immersive-storms/

  • Immersive Storms is now bundled with Scorchful
  • Sandstorms now apply in Savannas, but only visually (i.e., no sand pile accumulation or slowness)
  • Sandstorm wind has a new sound
  • Storm fog distances change depending on whether it is thundering, or just raining
  • Fog now disperses properly when under shelter
  • Fog is now more dense in Snowy biomes during thunder
  • Fog is now more dense during rain in Swamps and Pale Gardens
  • Ambient wind sounds and particles now appear in a select set of windy biomes

# A New Wiki

Scorchful has now officially migrated to its new wiki host! The wiki is still not 100% complete but it does contain even more information than the previous wiki did, so I am now making it the official wiki of Scorchful.

You can check out and contribute the new wiki at [https://modded.wiki/w/Mod:Scorchful](https://modded.wiki/w/Mod:Scorchful). Thanks Patbox for hosting this!
