Spyglass Astronomy

Explore a procedurally generated solar system through the lens of a spyglass!

The mod is entirely client-side and designed for helping with world-building and immersion, it is encouraged you think of lore about all the constellations you draw and planets you name!

Planets and stars will be the same for all players on a particular world, and are generated randomly (and largely scientifically accurately) per world, and you can easily share constellations between players using a client-side command

The scientific accuracy means the underlying physics of astrology (orbital resonance, alignments, etc) work exactly the same, you just have to spot them and make up your own lore!

Dependencies:

  • Fabric API (or the Quilt equivalent, although i have not tested this mod with Quilt)

How to use

To interact with the cosmos there are three spyglass modes: vanilla, constellation (amethyst), and star (emerald), these are cycled with the pick block button (middle click) while zoomed in.

Constellation mode allows you to draw constellations by holding the attack button (left click) and drawing between stars, as well as being able to select constellations

Star mode allows you to select stars and planets, note that comets are referred to as planets when using commands

Once an object is selected you can name it with /sga:name <name>, or get useful information with /sga:info, you can also get the information of a specific object without selecting it by following the suggestions after typing /sga:info <x>

If you're playing on a multiplayer server, you can use /sga:share or /sga:share <x> to share the currently selected or specified object respectively, this gives you a code you can send in chat or /message to someone directly, which allows them to easily add a constellation or name of a planet or star on their side, provided they have the mod too, of course. For an even smoother experience, you can use Spyglass Astronomy Sync, although that needs to be on the server too

All the client-side commands can be seen by looking at the suggestions after typing /sga:, or by looking at the list on the github readme

There is also a client+server mod that allows for bulk sharing, it's made by someone else, but it looks good!

Compatibility

You can use the mod with Cosmos to have its star rendering, and most of its customisability. I recommend increasing the star count with /sga:admin starCount <...>, since Cosmos looks nice with denser stars, but beware as anyone else youre playing with on that world will need to do it too if you want to be synced

If you want to use shaders, I recommend Complementary with Euphoria Patches, which has proper support for the colors of the stars and planets

Older versions of Spyglass Astronomy are incompatible with the mod Spyglass Improvements, however Spyglass Astronomy comes with its own scrollable spyglass zoom, and other mods, like Zoomglass, exist to allow for spyglass hotkeys

  • updated to 26.3
backport of changes to 26.1.2
  • increased max star count from 4095 to 32768 (4096 was trivial, but while testing it i realised i was wasting space in the constellation encoding. i now use it to have 8x more stars)
internal changes
  • split file io from loading logic for per-world data loading, which should help Spyglass Astronomy Sync have slightly cleaner code
  • moved star count variable from SpyglassAstronomyClient to SpaceDataManager (literally just organisation)
  • data loading should recover a little better in cases where half the file is missing, which, i dont think will really happen without interference
backport of recent changes, including cosmos compatibility
  • fixed crash when loading the game with cosmos for the first time (subsequent loads wouldnt crash, so i didnt notice it)
fixed crash when reloading resources at night - Kunshn (https://github.com/Nettakrim/Spyglass-Astronomy/pull/74)
fixed iris compatibilty for real (removed custom star shader, so stars are updated every tick again)
probably fixed iris compatibility (star pipeline wasnt registered. also cosmos pipeline will get registered)
  • added support for https://modrinth.com/mod/cosmos-mod!
  • if it is installed, then the stars will be rendered using its texture and shader etc
  • i recommend setting the star count a little higher (1024 -> 2048), since cosmos looks really pretty with denser stars
  • all cosmos config settings aside from alpha range and polaris toggle are respected
  • star names now kept when changing star count
  • planet/comet names now kept when changing year length
  • sga star animations now done in a vertex shader, so the buffer isnt rebuilt every frame (trading cpu time for a little extra gpu time, overall doesnt seem to impact performance for me, but i have a pretty good computer)
  • constellation lines now always correctly interpolate the colours of the connected stars (sga stars dont have much variance in colour so this was hard to spot, cosmos made it obvious)
updated to 26.2

updated to 1.21.9
[added iris support for stars (thanks fliplus!!)](https://github.com/Nettakrim/Spyglass-Astronomy/pull/54)

(so now they should be back to how they were, which was sometimes working, instead of never working)
fixed bug where planets werent selectable (turns out the note in the previous changelog was actually an issue)
updated to 1.21.6/7

from my testing, planets may have moved where they are in the sky? my testing may have been flawed though. theres no reason they should have moved though, it should be the same as 1.21.5. the relative alignments will definately be the same, idk, let me know if i broke your perfectly constructed orrery
  • fixed data storage on realms (a currently humorously out of date change as i am yet to make sure my mods work on 1.21.6)
  • fixed mysterious crash that shouldnt be possible
updated to 1.21.5
updated to 1.21.4
fixed bug where constellations and star names etc would reset when going through nether portals
  • backport of recent updates
  • fixed bug where constellations and star names etc would reset when going through nether portals
the different coloured spyglass modes now just render the outer frame on top of the vanilla one, this means resourcepacks that change the glass on vanilla's frames will also change the glass of the different modes
updated to 1.21.2/3
constellation data is now saved in the respective world folder when on a singleplayer world
[(see pr here)](https://github.com/Nettakrim/Spyglass-Astronomy/pull/35)
  • potentially fixed mysterious crash on changing dimension
  • this might be at the cost of not working properly on realms
  • but idk
fixed crash when loading a world with no constellations
mabye fixed mysterious other crash
fixed newly drawn lines flickering for a few frames
